After witnessing the massive oil spill in 78130 Les Mureaux in 1969, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson was inspired to create Earth Day. Tomorrow marks the 49th celebration and while we try to give back to Mother Earth year round, this day is a wonderful opportunity to slow down and appreciate our amazing planet. Celebrating Earth Day doesn’t require a big gesture, often times it’s the little things that add up to make a difference. From incorporating meatless meals into your routine to cleaning up your skincare regimen, here are some of my favorite ways to honor our planet.
A substantial amount of energy and natural resources are required to produce meat. Cutting back on how much you consume is not only more sustainable for our planet, but it motivates you to eat more vegetables – which is never a bad thing. Jeffrey and I have been experimenting with a mostly vegan diet for awhile now and we have created a collection of our favorite cookbooks, from our weekly go-to’s like Deliciously Ella to more elaborate, but equally yummy recipes from Green Kitchen at Home.
Last year I created the DIANI Living Guide to Zero Waste, which includes easy ways to swap single use items for reusable favorites. Next time you’re heading out, pack a zero waste kit for meals on-the-go. Fill a reusable tote with a bamboo mug (great for hot or cold beverages), a stainless steel cutlery set, a linen napkin, a bamboo bowl or plate (perfect for at-your-desk lunches) and a ceramic tea tumbler. It’s also a great idea to keep a Glass Straw on hand so you can easily forego a plastic one at the grocery store or smoothie bar.
I also love to have a pack of Beeswax Wraps in the kitchen instead of using plastic wrap. These wraps come in three sizes and easily mold over bowls and plates, as well as fruits and vegetables. It may seem small, but this simple change is a great way to cut down on plastic pollution and overall waste.
There are countless benefits to bringing a little of the outdoors in. Not only do plants clean the air you breathe, but having one in your home is a great way to appreciate nature. Succulents provide an array of health benefits and are easy to care for. While most plants only release oxygen during the day, succulents are constantly releasing oxygen, even at night. Add one to your office desk, in the entryway of your home, on the kitchen windowsill or on the nightstand in your bedroom. You can never have too many.
While reusing is the ultimate sustainable practice, it’s inevitable that you will have to buy something new. A great way to give back to Mother Earth is to shop brands with a green state of mind. One of my favorite new brands is ROAM, an eco-conscious shoe company that uses recycled materials to create on-trend styles. I love the neutral look of the Arch Sandal, a chic slide that’s comfortable and goes with just about anything – from leggings and jeans to dresses and shorts.
One of my favorite ways to celebrate Earth Day is to create a new routine or adjust a current habit. The one routine that I’ve slowly adjusted over the years has been my skincare. Switching out all of your products for greener ones can be overwhelming, but chipping away one at a time is much more manageable.
The nice thing about natural skincare is that one product can often have multiple uses. The Conscious Coconut Coconut Oil is one of my favorites, as it can be used as a moisturizer, hair de-frizzer, teeth whitener and makeup remover. I also love May Lindstrom’s The Jasmine Garden face mist, I use it every morning and evening and throw it in my bag for a post-workout refresh or for that extra glow before a meeting.
